On January 11, 2007, the 2011 World Police & Fire Games held its second annual benefit Gala, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan. Attendance grew to almost 500 attendees, and as the company matured, changes were reflected in the evening’s program.
For the first time, individuals were recognized and honored for accomplishments within their field, and as role models within the community. These honorees included: Mary Grilliot from the Total Fire Group, recognized for outstanding corporate support; George Ntim and Michael Stengel from the Marriott Marquis, granted the award for community service; Willie Randolph and Mariano Rivera, honored for their outstanding sportsmanship; and on behalf of NYC and Company, George Fertitta accepted the award for their service to the community.
Memorabilia was once again donated by Steiner Sports, who conducted a silent auction, donating all profits to the 2011 World Police & Fire Games. Providing a taste of the upcoming 2007 Games in Adelaide, Australia, beer was graciously provided by Coopers Brewery. Media representatives were present and pictures of the honorees and athletes appeared in local papers.
Overall, the second annual gala was a huge success. The newly introduced format helped streamline the event while creating more community awareness and involvement.
All honorees were very gracious with both their words and actions, taking the time to talk, sign autographs, and pose for pictures with many of the guests. Their status as role models and community leaders was only reinforced by their actions and generosity.
Although the 2011 Games are still four years out, it is the continued growing support of sponsors, government, police officers, firefighters, and the communities they serve, that will help to create the most ambitious, memorable games ever.
